Shoulder arthroscopic debridement is a keyhole procedure to clean up the shoulder joint — removing damaged tissue, bone spurs, loose bodies, and inflamed synovium. It may be performed for a variety of shoulder conditions when a specific structural repair is not required.
Small incisions are made around the shoulder. An arthroscope is inserted to visualise the joint. The surgeon may remove inflamed synovium (synovectomy), trim damaged labrum or biceps, remove loose bodies, debride partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, excise acromial spurs (subacromial decompression), and wash out the joint. The specific procedures performed depend on the findings. The operation takes 30–75 minutes.
Arthroscopic debridement is considered for shoulder pain with mechanical symptoms (catching, locking) from loose bodies or labral flaps, early glenohumeral arthritis with preserved joint space, partial-thickness rotator cuff tears not amenable to repair, and diagnostic arthroscopy when imaging has not clarified the diagnosis.
Physiotherapy, corticosteroid injection, activity modification, and anti-inflammatory medication. These are effective for most shoulder conditions.
