Quadriceps tendon repair is an operation to reattach the ruptured quadriceps tendon to the top of the kneecap (patella). Rupture prevents the ability to straighten the knee against gravity.
An incision is made over the front of the knee above the kneecap. The torn tendon ends are identified and stitched together using strong sutures passed through drill holes in the patella or via suture anchors. The repair may be reinforced with a protective suture or wire. The operation takes one to one and a half hours.
Surgery is essential for complete quadriceps tendon ruptures as the tendon cannot heal on its own and the patient cannot straighten the knee or walk normally without it.
Partial tears may be managed with bracing and physiotherapy. Complete ruptures always require surgery.
