What This Procedure Involves
An incision is made over the lateral hip. The greater trochanter is cut (trochanteric flip osteotomy) and reflected to expose the hip capsule. The hip is carefully dislocated using a technique that preserves the blood supply to the femoral head (the Ganz approach). With the hip fully exposed, cam and pincer impingement is corrected, labral tears repaired, and cartilage damage addressed under direct vision. The hip is relocated, the trochanter repaired with screws, and the wound closed. The operation takes two to three hours.
